What is Animal Naturopathy?
Ashlie Williamson, Lecturer
Naturopathic medicine is a category of medicine that blends traditional and natural forms of medicine with modern scientific knowledge. It is based on nature and its healing power, to support and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself.
Naturopathy highlights the importance of the whole body working together as one unit. The inside mechanics working in unison with the outside mechanics. Focusing on healing from the ‘inside- out and the outside-in’.
By looking at the health of the whole body and not just focusing on one area, ensures that all aspects of the animals physical and mental well-being are considered to aid the natural healing processes.
“Maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots” – Rumi
By looking at the symptoms, a practitioner is limited in the true investigative nature of what Naturopathic Medicine focuses on in the holistic paradigm. If the disease originates in the roots but is only visible in the leaves, no matter how many leaves you cut off, the disease will still continue to live in the origins of the roots. That is why at the ANME, we say ‘what’s the root of the problem?’
Within the Naturopathic mind-set, the practitioner must clearly identify a condition, if one exists. They must be adequately trained in the sciences to be safe and aware when ongoing referral should take place. However, the practitioner working in this model will embrace the fundamental principles of whole health management. The focus moves to health and wellbeing and partnerships are formed. Many Naturopathic modalities may be used to assist the systems of the body that are under load to heal.
The fascinating study into naturopathy for animals explores specific areas such as anatomy and physiology, herbal medicine, herbal manufacturing and dispensing, nutrition, pasture management, remedial massage, clinical principles of naturopathy, safety and efficacy.
Note: At times a veterinarian diagnosis with pathology, x-ray and ultrasound are necessary to effectively treat conditions and disease. Once a correct diagnosis has been established then it is safe to proceed with the recommendations and skills that this course will provide.
